Reflection and thanks

It is thanksgiving day and I thought this would be a great chance to reflect on my internship. My internship at NCM was a great experience for myself. The work I was doing might not have been what I would like to do with my life but I believe I learned many life lessons. I was able to live in LA not knowing many people and dealing with different issues such as where to go in LA and traffic. I really believe this helped me mature as a young adult. I was able to walk away with an understanding of how the corporate world works. Overall this was a great time in my life. I would like to thank NCM, Doug Gellerman and Jena Turkhamier. Also a special thanks to Kristin Labay and Ruben Cusani

Dale Carnegie Essay

When I first started my NCM internship I would hear whispers about a legendary book that Doug gives to all of his new employees. It was not till my third week when I really found out what the book was and why the book is important. I found out the book was Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People. Through talking with Doug I learned this book was first published in the year 1937, even though this book could be called dated; the facts and lessons are still valuable to this day.
Many of the ideas or lessons in this book could seem like common sense to most people but it is quite odd on how many people over look the simple things taught in this book. While growing up I always tried to do the right thing and treat people with respect. A lesson in this book that many people do not follow or do not try to follow is the simple idea of smiling. When someone smiles at someone else in most cases people will smile back. Through my experiences it normally turns out to be a positive gesture and could lead to positive results. This is away to start in a friendly way and receive a positive feedback from the person who you are engaging with. I might compare smiling to another person putting a key into a door, because a smile can open a door of conversation with another person. With the door now open a conversations always needs to stay positive. I received more reassurance from this book that do not tell people they are wrong but instead show them that something might not be working or is not quite right. Also on the flipside of that if you realize you are wrong admit it right away and figure out what you did wrong.
Through out this book I got the theme of respect is very important in the business world and in life in general. People like to hear their own voice so people need to be respectful listeners and engage the other when it is appropriate. Also through another sign of respect is using ones name when engaging them in conversation, people like to hear their name is shows a sign of importance and caring of who they are. Overall through showing respect to another person if it is with just a smile or with a full on engaged conversation, it makes people feel important and have purpose.

My internship project is really starting to heat up. Next week is the presentation in front of the whole company. It is on Garnier not very exciting. It has been interesting on creating a deck that will be pleasing to Garnier. It’s hard to work with others when they are in a different time zone such as New York. By the time you start your day their day is half over. This week I have many company events and outings which will be exciting, but no Friday off for me.

its almost over

D-Box

I am not good at this blogging thing. I find it hard to figure out what to write about. Lately I have been doing a lot more internship office work, like copies and things like that. But I did give a presentation on D-Box motion. Here is the link to my presentation

WORKIN

Work has been going well. I went on a meeting today with Moxie and partner company of Fox. It had a lot to deal with internet use for promotion and displaying new content. NCM gave their normal pitch of what they are and how they could benefit Moxie. It was very interesting to hear everything from the internet side.

I also saw the building from the first Die Hard, very awesome.

Promax week

For this last week of work I attended the Promax conference in downtown LA. It was a mix of cooperate people and creative personal. It was a lot of fun and an exciting time. I was the one who ran the booth for my company. It was a great learning chance. Oh and also last week a co worker had to be let go and this was also very interesting because I got a chance to witness what happens when someone is let go. This next week I believe I will be going to the twilight screening. That will be fun and a good chance to mix with people. I have learned it's about who you know.

First day

My first day of my internship started at 6am, can you say I was nervous? I left my place at 7 because of all the horror stories you hear about LA traffic well I got to work at 7:25 and I started at 8:30 so you could say I was early. Well as soon as 8:30 rolled around I got a tour of my office and was given a cubicle. After dealing with some computer issues, I had to sit through 2 conference calls. As a part of intern welcoming everyone has to sing their schools fight song. I made Oregon proud. GO Ducks. As a part of NCM is working with other companies for advertisement space in the segment First Look before the films. I had to gather a greater understanding of what the company does. The first thing I was able to do was help compile a list of videogame release dates for the E3 conference that is happening this week in LA. That was a lot of fun. My body is not use to working these long days, it sure did wipe me out.
